Tools for Electoral Understanding
Practical knowledge supports better interpretation of electoral participation, political representation and democratic processes.
Ask Better Questions of the Evidence
Use these interactive checklists to guide a reading or discussion. They help distinguish measures, examine sources and consider inclusion and safety. Ticking a point records your review on this page; it does not certify a dataset, an observation or an incident account.
Representation Explainer
Choose a measure to see the question it can answer.
Who contests an election?
A candidacy count describes entries in a defined contest or list. A candidate share compares a recorded group with that candidacy total. Neither measure establishes who won office, and entries are not automatically unique people.
Reading question: Check the election, office, source and whether the unit is a person or a participation.
